Aberystwyth University 3-6 Aberaeron

Report 23rd of November

Aberystwyth University 3-6 Aberaeron

A return to league action for Aberaeron saw them travel to Vicarage Fields to play a young University side who have had a poor start to their season. Aberaeron welcomed back Dan James to the first team squad following a short stint at Penrhyncoch but we were missing commanding centre-back Rhodri Edwards who was away. The starting line-up saw Mathew Clarke starting at left-back and he was soon in the thick of the action. Following early pressure from Aberaeron, the breakthrough was made by Gareth Severs after a through ball from centre midfielder Gareth Evans. Severs cut into the box from the left side and dispatched his shot to the near post passed the home goalkeeper. The lead was doubled within the next 5 minutes after a quick free-kick was taken by Mathew Clarke which caught the home side off guard. After a succession of corners from Severs, the third goal arrived after flap by the goalkeeper which allowed Sion Clarke to volley home from close range. Before the 20th minute, the score was 4-0 to Aberaeron following a poor control by the University centre-back that was swiftly capitalised upon by Severs who calmly ran the ball towards goal and cheekily lifted it over the goalkeeper to leave the students shell-shocked. Aberaeron then had a claim for a penalty turned down after Evans was fouled in the box. The University pulled a goal back before the break with a well worked team goal. Within a minute of the re-start, the score was 4-2 as poor marking by the Aberaeron defence left the Uni centre-forward with a simple header passed goalkeeper Phil Draper. A short time after there was a scuffle in the box following a blatant dive by a home player and he was shown a yellow card along with centre-back Clarke who was lucky not to see red. However, the University were awarded a penalty shortly after but it was poorly taken by Dan March and ended up somewhere beyond the tennis courts. Aberaeron capitalised on this second chance with a counter-attacking goal finished off by left winger Chris Wilkins. Another University goal followed after centre back Simon Bray was embarrassed on the left side of the area by the winger who nudged the ball through Bray’s legs and squared it to the unmarked striker who slotted home down the middle of the goal. Goalkeeper Draper could only get a hand to it but should surely have done better. The game was then sealed with another goal from Sion Clarke who headed home from his brothers pin-point cross. Aberaeron now face another tough away fixture at the undefeated Llandrindod Wells. Manager Foligno will be hoping to see another fine performance from his side.
