BEDLINOG 9 ABERCYNON 31
Abercynon’s mini-revival continued at Bedlinog where an outstanding team effort enabled them to gather another 5 point win, their second in succession. On a heavy, muddy pitch both sets of players gave their all but the telling difference was that the visitors, buoyed by their recent achievements, had that little bit extra all round. Cynon started the stronger but some silly errors presented the home team with early opportunities to put points on the board and they went 6-0 ahead following two penalty goals from centre Ben Grzeski. Gradually though, Gavin Moses’ team began to exert a firm grip on proceedings through their forwards and when Bedlinog transgressed at a five metre scrum the referee awarded a penalty try. Outside half Matthew Turner converted and after the Cynon pack had again the home eight backtracking Turner successfully added the conversion points to a push over try from number 8 Chris King. Bedlinog came more into the game after that but they could not threaten the Cynon line. However, a third penalty from Grzeski cut the leeway but with the prospect of a strong wind at their backs to come, Cynon were happy to go into the interval with a 5 point lead.
The second half began with Cynon again taking charge but to a man Bedlinog tackled like demons to halt an almost continual onslaught. The breakthrough came when Matthew Turner popped over a penalty to make it 17-9 and then as Cynon once more bulldozed the opposition forwards, scrum half Gareth Jones nipped in to score a try that Turner converted. Cynon then gained a 4th, bonus-point try from flanker Ryan James who touched down following a storming blind-side break. While it would be difficult to pick a man of the match as every man played their part, the front row of Gavin Moses, Jon Lidster and Gavin Hole were simply outstanding. In turn they were ably backed up by fellow forwards Meirion Withey, Luke Conway, Jack Perkins, Ryan James and Chris King.
This Saturday Cynon are home to Fleur De Lys in a rearranged fixture, kick off 2-30
