Übermütig oder den start schlicht verschlafen? / Overly confident or complacent during the first half?
On Saturday the 23rd of February, Shetland rugby team made the long journey down to Woodside to claim victory against Aberdeenshire 3rd XV. Shetland, having played more games than Aberdeen, were higher up the table and Aberdeenshire 3rd’s hoped to gain some ground with a win. Even though Aberdeenshire expected Shetland to put up a great fight, we were confident about our ability to win, claiming two wins from the last two games....maybe overly confident.
During the first few minutes Shetland were dominant on the field and Aberdeenshire could not find a way into the game. Strong head on running from the Shetland center and second rows lead to repeated line breaks which resulted in a tumbling Aberdeenshire defense. The tackles were often too high and in general the motivation to turn the game around could not be felt. Whenever Aberdeenshire launched attacks the promising initial momentum did unfortunately not result in points as handling errors stopped the attacks short. After 40 minutes it was obvious from the score - 4 tries against - that Aberdeenshire would have to make a bigger effort to fight back the second half and maybe turn the game around.
The team came out of the break with renewed enthusiasm seemingly now motivated to play the game in the opposition’s half. Strong tackling and good team effort led first Drew Forbes and later James Dooley
to cross the try line for some much needed points. Aberdeenshire put Shetland under pressure repeatedly during the second half but Shetland was able to prevent further tries through strong defense.
This game was a tale of two halves with Aberdeenshire dominating the second but not being able to score more points than previously conceded in the first half.
