Dear players and former players,
Many of you will already know me as I am Scottish Rugby’s Regional Development Manager for Grampian and I have undertaken to help get the Aberdeen Strollers back up and running. I took part in the World Festival in 2008 in Edinburgh which was a fantastic experience and more recently I have just had a run out with the newly formed Moray Maulers. There are 3 local teams already going to the Scottish festival in Inverness on June 1st - Moray Maulers, Mackie Mammoths and the Gariochatrics and it would be great if we could also get a Strollers squad back up and running.
Sadly, for a number of years, Aberdeen Strollers Golden Oldies Rugby Team has been dormant, but as the Club reaches its 5th Decade, every effort is going to be made to resurrect the Team with former Players and new members. Aberdeen Veterans and ' Golden Oldies " Rugby had been organised in the 1960's by Ron Comber, Doug Georgeson and a group of fairly enthusiastic Rugby Fanatics, playing local teams and whoever else they could find and cajole to provide opposition! This group of sporty stalwarts developed into 'Aberdeen Strollers ' who for many years, were the only Scottish Team attending the World and European Rugby Festivals.
Aberdeen Strollers attended their first World Festival, in London in 1985, and their last major outing was at the World Golden Oldies Rugby Festival in Edinburgh in 2008 with everyone involved having a great time. Since then, Scottish Golden Oldies Rugby has developed and grown….with new Teams forming for each Festival….including a Team of our Refs– The Whistlers! The first three Scottish Festivals were held in Perth and the 4th, in St Andrews. This year’s Festival takes place at Highland RFC, Inverness on June 1st and we hope to have a good squad take to the field…..and whether an old stalwart Stroller…or joining in for the first time, you shall be most welcome to participate in the – Fun, Friendship and Fraternity…..
For those less familiar with Golden Oldies Rugby, whilst adhering to the IRB Laws, there are some variations –
There are unlimited substitutions
Games are played over shorter time periods
Over aggressive Play is NOT condoned
Golden Oldies play in ‘ Festivals ’ not ‘ Tournaments ’
Age is shown by the colour of shorts Players wear……over 60’s cannot be Tackled
Golden Oldies Rugby is played in the Ethos of – Fun, Friendship and Fraternity
As you can imagine the Mailing List of Players is somewhat out of date, so I would be most grateful if you can–
a) Advise me if you no longer wish to remain on the Aberdeen Strollers mailing or
b) Complete the attached form and return it to me as I hope to have a game arranged within a few weeks against one of the other local teams.
Please give this request some serious thought…..and feel free to inform any other over 35 players that you know who may be interested in getting a run around and having some fun playing the game. Spread the word! Even if you do not wish to play, you can still support Aberdeen Strollers by getting involved and helping me to raise the phoenix from the ashes……
