The Jenny Stokes shield, for the first time, resides in the safe hands of Abergavenny!

Abergavenny played Hereford this weekend in the 3rd encounter of the annual mixed hockey match between the 2 clubs to commemorate ex chair Jenny Stokes who died in 2012.

Jenny was a hugely influential figure in the history of Abergavenny Hockey Club, and was instrumental in getting the club into the good shape it is. As always, the selection for this match consisted of a range of players that are products of the youth section of the club, together with committee members who drive the club forward with the same determination as Jenny did in her time.

The match itself was a fast paced affair, with the Abergavenny youth players showing energy throughout. A determination to create space and find teammates with telling passes, began to open up the Hereford defence. Dan Taylor and Megan Nicholls up front continually lost their markers and began to create some threatening moves. Great wide support play by wings Nia Johns and Laura Harrington allowed midfielders Kevin Phillips, Tom McGlynn and Kim Cashmore to move the ball out of the middle areas and the team forged many attacks from wide positions. Although Abergavenny shaded the possession and territory throughout the match, there were still many needs for high quality defensive skills from Nick Fackrell, Darren Lock, Stuart Lewis, Sharon Phillips, Alyson Davies and Kayleigh Jones. Alex McGlynn in the home goal was called upon to make several saves but on the whole the home team deserved to come out as 5-1 winners, with goals from Kevin, Tom (2), Megan and Dan.

Both clubs were grateful to Monmouthshire County Council for waiving the pitch hire fees for this match; this, coupled with donations received from the players on the day, allowed us to make a donation of over £180 to MacMillan Cancer care.

We have plenty of photos of the match, they are 2 albums Photo album 1 and Photo album 2

With Hereford having taken the shield on the previous 2 occasions this victory ensures that things are starting to even up slightly, and next year's encounter looks set to be an interesting one!
