Abergavenny Hockey Club is signed up to become part of a National Hockey Club open weekend, Why not come and join us?

Abergavenny Hockey Club are kicking off the new season by hosting a club open day on Saturday 6th September 2014. The day is designed to inspire everyone, from potential new players who have never picked up a stick before, right through to seasoned members.

The day will start with a junior focus, Abergavenny Leisure Centre are going to bring an inflatable fun pitch and have kindly provided free use of the Astroturf as well for us to provide short games and training drills for all of our junior players. Even if you have never picked up a stick before, this will be the ideal opportunity to get involved. We have all of the equipment that you will need, just bring yourself! Tony Pryce Sports will also be hosting a demo day at our pitch, so there is even an opportunity to try out all of the latest sticks (like the ones used by Hockey Wales players during the Commonwealth Games!)

This will take place from 09:30am until 11:30am.

Following on from this, our Ladies 2nd XI will then take to the field for their first friendly fixture of the season against Chepstow Ladies Hockey Club. – This will be a fun packed fixture, where our Ladies 2nd XI will look to make some pre-season progress before representing our club in the South Wales Women’s League for the first time ever! Again, the inflatable pitch will be available, so come along, meet members of our club and get the chance to pick up a stick and have a go.

After lunch, our sports hall will be available and there will be a chance for players of all abilities to have a go at some indoor hockey. We have a number of players, umpires and coaches around and so feel free to come along and get involved. The idea is that we will group players by level of age experience and create several short games to keep the hockey flowing throughout the day.
(Again, Tony Pryce Sports will still be running their stick demo day, so feel free to make the most of this and try out all of the latest makes and models).

Our Senior Ladies 1st XI will then arrive at 1:30pm to step up their pre-season efforts in a friendly fixture against Howardians Hockey Club. Our Ladies 1st XI have set themselves a big promotion target this season, so why not come and cheer them on and see some good hockey on display?

The final event of the day will be for our Men’s 1st XI who play in a local derby against Brecon Hockey Club. The mens XI made a big stride forward last season, gaining promotion into De-Cymru 1 (South Wales Division 1). They will need to make sure that they are on top of their game if they are to thrive in this division, and the hard work starts here! This final event takes place at 3:00 pm.

As with all hockey club events, this should be a big social event for our club, and with all three sides taking to the same field in 1 day, this has been branded ‘Super Saturday’. We are hoping that all of the teams will be present to participate, help welcome new members and also support the other teams representing our club on the 6th September.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve never been to a hockey club before, Abergavenny Hockey Club will always offer a friendly welcome with plenty of opportunities for you to get involved. Keep an eye on our club Facebook and Twitter accounts for more information.
