Acklam give West a scare but concede late tries

Acklam gave 3rd placed West Hartlepool a scare only to concede 3 very late tries, leaving them with nothing to show for all their efforts.
West were on top in the early stages and opened the scoring when they drove from a line out then moved the ball wide for their inside centre to go over for an unconverted try. Despite the home team's efforts they went further behind when they lost a line out near their 22 and West going left then right to score in the corner and stretch their lead to 10 nil.
However, Acklam started to get into the game - from a scrum the ball went wide to full back Brad Gater, then back inside for scrum half Danny Ashton to pick up from the ruck and cross for a try. This was converted by stand off Marcus Sudron to get Acklam on the scoreboard at 7-10.
Acklam were now getting on top in the scrums and nearly scored again - centre Josh Abraham made a good break, but with Acklam pressing the visitors line the ball was lost and West were relieved to be able to clear. The game seemed finely balanced with West taking a narrow lead into half time.
Both sides had promising attacks early in the second half. First West's big left winger made a break which was eventually stopped by Abraham who had a great run himself a few minutes later, beating several players before being downed by a desperate tap tackle. After 50 minutes good Acklam defence forced a West infringement on their 22 and Sudron kicked the penalty to level the scores. From the restart Acklam were soon back on the attack and the visitors were again penalised at the breakdown. This gave Sudron the chance to put Acklam ahead but unfortunately his kick was wide of the posts.
West were rattled but retook the lead with two penalties of their own. Acklam were still in the match until the last few minutes. Trying to play from inside their 22 they were pulled up for a forward pass and West took advantage with their winger scoring from the scrum. At the end Acklam's game completely unravelled - second row Paddy O'Brien was penalised and yellow carded when trying to defend a line out near Acklam's line. West took another line out from which they scored then kicked long from the restart, won the ball back and scored a fifth try. The final score was 10-33 to West, which didn't really reflect Acklam's contribution to a game which for a time they had looked capable of winning.
