Acklam win a thriller to go through in Silver Trophy

In Acklam's Silver Trophy match they defended badly at times against hard running visitors Roundhegians and at one point looked to be heading for their first defeat of the season. However, they won the forward battle in the scrums and scored some excellent tries to eventually come out on top in a thrilling encounter, by 47 points to 36.
Roundhegians took an early lead when their left winger ran through some weak tackling to score. Acklam came back strongly, pushing the visitors scrum over their own line enabling Acklam number 8 Paddy O'Brien to touch down, with the conversion by stand off Danny Ashton for a 7 - 5 lead. The home side increased their lead straight away. After the restart went straight out and the resulting scrum centre Marcus Sudron made a good break then fed winger Chris Mallam who beat two men to score a lovely try. However, on 20 minutes Acklam were again undone by poor defence as Roundhegians ran through under the posts to narrow the home team's lead to 14 - 12. The scoreboard continued to tick over as Acklam again pushed the visitor's scrum off the ball and Ashton sold a clever dummy to score. A few minutes later Acklam were again on the attack, looking to increase their lead but a poor pass gifted the visitors a breakaway interception try. There was still time in an action packed half for Acklam hooker Ben Snaith to score a good try and the home side led 28 - 19 at the break.
Within the first ten minutes of the second half Roundhegians struck with two quick tries to take a 28 - 31 lead and a home defeat looked likely. However, Acklam again managed to turn things around. After a sustained attack a cross kick by Ashton was gathered by Josh Abraham to score, then great support play by the home team ended in a try for Josh Sayer. Both tries were well converted by Ashton to put Acklam 42 -31 in front. Of course there was more to come with Roundhegians scoring again, but Acklam eventually clinched a thrilling win when full back Dean Roberts used his pace to head for the corner, then gave a well timed pass inside for supporting Brad Gator to score. Acklam then defended for the last few minutes to eventually come out on top by 47 -36.
