A great first half from the Talbots, then they have to fight hard for the victory
On a bitterly cold day Acklam Talbots produced a great first half performance, running in 34 points before the break. However, game opponents Barnard Castle then came back strongly making the Talbots work hard for the win.
After conceding a scrum from the kick off Acklam soon won the ball back and made good ground downfield. After several phases centre Liam Cochrane went through to score under the posts. Although the conversion was missed the Talbots were soon back on the attack - attacking from a scrum they moved the ball out, back inside then wide again for w Brandon Wright to go over . This time the conversion was kicked by wingerChris Mallam to give the home team a 12 nil lead after just 5 minutes.
Barney were struggling to contain the Talbots who struck again through a breakaway and great run by Ethan Ogul to score in the corner, Acklam kept on the attack with good breaks by Wright and Cochrane before stand off Alex Faint took advantage of a misplaced to score the next try. Then another flowing move created Wright's second try to put Acklam 27 nil up.
Acklam continued to threaten with more good work by Faint and winger Tom Hughes. However, the visitors eventually got on the scoreboard themselves when they picked up a from an Acklam knock on to run away for a converted try. They looked to attack again but a smart interception try by replacement Chris Walker restored Acklam's 27 point lead.
The pattern of the game changed as the visitors, reinforced by changes from the bench, ran in two quick tries either side of the break to bring them back in the game at 34-21.
The rest of the game was closely contested with some good kicking by Walker relieving pressure on the home side. They were finally able to clinch the victory in the dying minutes of the game. After another great run by Faint they got close to the visitors line. Although the ball was lost and Barney cleared to touch Walker broke from the lineout and prop John Garton was up in support to score the final try. After a hard fought second half the game ended in a very good 39 21 victory for the Talbots.
