Superb Acklam run Ashington ragged in 12 try victory

After some good attacking play gave Acklam a clear half time lead they absolutely ran home team Ashington off their feet after the break, scoring almost at will to run up a resounding 76 - 10 victory.
Acklam were on the offensive right from the start - after a few minutes they were able to move the ball out to powerful winger Josh Abraham who burst through a number of tackles to score, converted by Danny Ashton for an early 7 nil lead.
Acklam continued to press, but to their credit Ashington defended doggedly, until the visitors were eventually able to break through again 20 minutes later. This time Abraham turned provider when, after again receiving the ball out wide, he waited for a clever outside supporting run by Dean Roberts before putting him in for a lovely try. Acklam had dominated the home team's scrum from the start and when they pushed them off the ball again shortly before half time this enabled Marcus Sudron to give Abraham the opportunity to beat more would be tacklers to go over again, with Ashton adding the extra two points - 19 nil to Acklam at half time.
Whilst Acklam had been in control of the game in the first half, after the break they seemed to go up a couple of gears and Ashington couldn't live with it. Soon after the restart from a line out in the Ashington 22 Acklam worked the ball from side to side and centre Ricky Scott eventually forced his way over for a try. Ashington kicked the restart long but Acklam still ran it straight back and Dean Roberts, who had started the match at scrum half before switching to his usual full back role, ran superbly from his own 22 to score again to increase Acklam's lead to over 30 points.
There was only a brief respite for the home team as 5 minutes later they were penalised in their own 22. Acklam took a scrum from which they moved the ball wide, with number 8 Andy Dalton backing up well inside to go over. Then from another Acklam scrum the ball was recycled a number of times before ending up with second row Tim Savage who charged in under the posts. Just before the hour mark more superb support play enabled Ashton to score a try which he converted to bring up the 50 points.
Ashington eventually got some reward when, after Acklam prop Paul Owens was sinbinned, they forced their way over from a driving maul to get on the scoreboard.
This was only a temporary respite, however, as Acklam came back with three more quickfire scores - they ran a penalty to put winger Chris Mallam away to score. Then Roberts collected the restart, broke away and gave Mallam a lightning brace of tries. Then the next restart didn't go 10 and from the resulting scrum Scott scored his second and Acklam's 11th try.
The exhausted home side continued to show spirit and scored another late consolation try. However, Acklam still had the final word when Owens, by now back on the pitch, fielded an attempted Ashington kick through to set up one more Acklam attack finished off by centre Paul Roberts to put the seal on a magnificent 76 - 10 victory for the league leaders.
