As preseason friendlies go this must of been a very useful game for both teams to iron out some blunt edges before the real rugby starts next week.

This was a late rearranged game as both clubs did not have opposition to play before the season starts next week. Therefore apologies to the Acklam supporters who did not know about this match, i found out at 1.15 p.m. to-day.
Guisborough hosted the game and it is very clear how they gained promotion last season, they are a big and skilful team who have pace around the field. Remember they chalked up 40 or 50 points regularly last season against Durham 1 opposition. Both teams had key players missing which is normal in preseason games, however the players from both teams played with full commitment.

Acklam had to defend in the first 8 minutes without having any possession, during this period Acklam held up four try scoring opportunities by Guisborough, the fifth resulted in a try. Acklam's defence was magnificent but when they had opportunities to win set pieces from line out play, this did not happen. Therefore after the first quarter Guisborough led by 7-0.

In the second quarter, once again the line out did not function and eventually the strong running Guisborough No. 8 (ex Acklam player) broke through and off loaded to give Guisborough a two try lead. The game became more even, although Guiborough were quicker to the break down, but Acklam did have more attacking options. Lead 14-0.

Acklam were much stronger in the third quarter, putting the home team under pressure. Chris McRoberts at No. 9 rounded off an excellent performance when he scored under the posts. Paddy O'Brian (as green as his name) was knocked into touch in the corner as he was about to score (dive low for the try line). Paddy represents what is good in our game....tremendous effort! Ended 3rd Q 14-7.

The fourth quarter started with a try in the corner for Guisborough, was it a try or not....it looked short of the line from the touchline....where was the touch judge.....Phil ! That was the only score, so the game finished 21-7.

Acklam have to take real positives from the game, with at least 5 players missing who will probably start the league season next week...this was a tremendous effort by the Acklam players. Well done to Colts Ryan Freemantle (2nd Row), Bradley Gator (wing)...massive learning curve. Marcus Sudron was outstanding, especially that he was only back in training this week. Key player Danny Ashton sat out a third of the game which made Acklam's overall performance even better. The scrum went well against a heavier pack. The backs had to play off scrap ball, so if we can sort out the line out play and give our backs the opportunity to play, we will cause problems to our league opponents this season.
