Durham City 91 Acklam 22
Acklam are torn apart by City but come away with a bonus point
After a bright start Acklam went down to a very heavy defeat against a hard running Durham City side, the only consolation being getting a bonus point for scoring 4 tries themselves.
In the early minutes of the game Acklam were awarded a penalty and an attacking line out in City's 22.They ran the ball, stand off Danny Ashton made a break and right winger Chris Mallam
went over in the corner to give the visitors an early 5 nil lead.
From there it all went wrong for Acklam however. They ran the restart and made ground before left winger Tom Hughes
was forced into touch just inside the City half. From the lineout City made a devastating midfield break to put their player over. For the rest of the half a combination of strong running by City and poor Acklam defence resulted in 7 more tries, all converted by the home side's excellent kicker, giving them a huge half time lead of 56 - 5.
Although the game was lost Acklam did improve and put up a fight in the second half, with promising debuts from the bench by Theo Guignard
and Nathan Faint
. Acklam again scored the first try of the half with a good pick and drive by skipper Ben Pearson
Again the early try for the visitors stirred the strong City runners into action, as they scored 4 more converted tries to stretch the lead to 84 - 10. To their credit Acklam did not throw in the towel - they rallied again with two more tries in the last 10 minutes, a second from Pearson and a fine effort from Chris Walker
, also on from the bench, to give Acklam a 4 try bonus point. However, there was still time for City to have the last word, breaking to score yet another try to make the score 91 - 22 at full time.
