Hustlers v Newtonians
The wait goes on.....
The 7th October 2017 saw the Hustlers travel to Newton Aycliffe to face the "Newtonians".
An error from the Kick off found Acklam facing early pressure which continued for the first 10 minutes but with some good rugby being played by both sides.
The Hustlers then found themselves taking a surprising lead through outside centre Ashley Gibson, touching down for his 2nd try of the season, with Bobby Marks unable to add the extra points from a difficult angle.
Acklam then seemed to take their foot off the gas and sit back as "Newtonians" stepped things up.
The Acklam pack normally 2nd to none when it comes to the scrum had met their match on this occasion, coming up against what can only be described as a HUGE "Newtonians" front row.
Silly mistakes and knock ons from both sides meant there was plenty of scrum time, and with "Newtonians" front 3 dominating they were able to use this as foundation and added a brace of converted tries.
At half time there were two substitutions from the Hustlers with the introduction of Shaun "Gimley" Tudhope and the long awaited 5th return of John"Big Deals" Mackay.
"Newtonians" continued to take the game to ack, and with some strong running from their centres, who wouldnt look out of place in anyone's 1st xv they were able to add to the score. Luke Herdman came on for Ack midway into the 2nd half and showed some promising signs in what was only his 2nd game of rugby.
Brandon Wright offered some relief with his powerful running and Bobby Marks carried the ball well in to contact, but there was no end product from the Hustlers who were struggling with white line fever, having made several errors on the oppositions 5 meter line and perhaps changed the outcome of the game. In the end "Newtonians" took the spoils 46-5 and the wait for that 1st win goes on.
Man of the Match again goes to Bobby Marks for the 2nd week running showing tireless commitment to the end.
A special mention goes to Rizwan, who was making his debut for Acklam and put in a solid performance.
