Hustlers v Wensleydale
Great spirit till the end despite the result
Due to a late Newton Aycliffe cry off, The Hustlers played host to Wensleydale unicorns for a friendly game.
We were staring at uncontested scrums just 1hr before kick off when Brad Pluves stepped up , Neil Mcavoy stepped in & young Cameron offered to go hooker .
Then from nowhere , a gentleman from Aycliffe called Mark turned up asking to play for us , he played hooker & did a great job for us .
The first half was a poor affair for Ack with tackles missed , tries conceded & attacking play limited to individual runners . Wayno turned up ( straight from work offshore ) midway through 1st half , slotted in at 10 & helped organise the backs .
The bright spots were the scrum held firm and the forwards & centres started to get into the game . Our young pack had 3 colts - Joel, Adam ,Storm and Simon who’s come to us through the R2R sessions , all of them Playing really well .
Half time couldn’t come soon enough & after a big reorganisation to the forwards & wings it was back into it.
2nd half changes saw Ralphy & Mikey Savage make a huge difference to the scrum and this put Wensleydale on the back foot , but with a lot of their team having experience of Rugby at Yorkshire 3 level our makeshift attack still struggled to make a breakthrough.
The game was summed up by great work by the full team ending up with Max dummying a ‘dale player ( who’s probably still running) to put Finton clear through , only for him to trip 5metres from the try line and deny us a consolation try.
End score was Wensleydale lots, Acklam nil.
Man of the Match was between Joel Nichols and Simon Jones for great tackling & work breakdown . Joel edged it & Simon got to down a pint in the club after so both were happy .
Dick of the Day went straight to Finton , but as he mysteriously left right after the match it was left to Alex Mohan for his efforts at centre to down his pint :))
Special mention to our colts
Adam , Brandon, Joel , Storm & Tom and also
R2R Michael Kay for giving a great account of themselves .
Today was a tough game against better opponents , yet Ralphy & I still take the positives that 20+ players pulled on a 3rd team ACKLAM shirt , had a game of rugby where everyone tried right to the end and enjoyed a few laughs and beers along the way .
