Hustlers v Whitby
Rugby eh ? What a game !!
Before we start , I just knew we would win today - I just didn’t realise we’d do it with so much style.
On a beautiful sunny Saturday , Acklam welcomed Whitby to talbot park for our final home game of the season.
A competent Hustlers team took to the pitch & immediately attacked the visitors . A strong Acklam scrum set the tone for the rest of the game with our pack driving Whitby back .
Wayno at 9 was linking perfectly with simmo having a blinder at 8 & Ash having his best performance at 10 for us this season , Ack made the possession count .
1st half tries were scored by Ash on a great solo run & George with a simple pick up from the back of the scrum to fall over the line . Ash also added a conversion.
A harsh straight red for Pete ( it’s a rare thing in social Rugby & I think other factors outside this match may have influenced the colour of the card) left us with 50 minutes still to play with 14 men .
We responded brilliantly to keep on attacking and preventing Whitby from crossing our line , going in 12- nil up at the break .
Half time came and we changed the front row with Neal dropping out after an industrious 40 mins to be replaced by Bear .
Whitby brought on a few 1st team players but the Hustlers stretched their lead with a cracking stop/start try from Ben Barra & then the backs linked perfectly to put Alex Mohan on the scoresheet with a well deserved try .
Further changes saw Jack Mac and Lee replace J ames on the wing and Simon & Adam Gaunt (in his first senior appearance since starting R2R ) joined the pack & helped it maintain its dominance over Whitby .
To their credit Whitby managed to pull 2 tries back as Acklam’s poor decision making let them in but the result was never in doubt after what was probably the Hustlers best performance of the season.
Man of the match goes to the full team for a great performance & scoring 2 tries when we down to 14 men.
Dick of the day was a close call , it nearly went to Cameron for his 40 yard sideways run without ever going forward but Pete takes it for getting a straight red.
The final score of 22-12 doesn’t give credit to our performance , especially the strength of our pack driving Whitby off their own ball numerous times -
Take a bow Neal , Karl, Mikey Sav , Bear , Ross , Cam , Adam, Simon , John, Jeremy.
Everyone who saw or played in this match knew there was only one team in it.
Thankyou to everyone who turned out for us , you were class.
