It' s a big cup tonic for AFC Bridgford
AFC BRIDGFORD first cup encounter was way beyond expectation after they beat Sandiacre side Racing Athletic 4-2. The first goal came from Martin Young, hitting the back of the net after continual pressure from Bridgford paid off. Following the goal, Bridgford continued to pressure a below-par Athletic. But, despite a number of good chances, Bridgford were unable to put the ball past the keeper again. It wasn"t until Bridgford were awarded a penalty that they were able to increase the scoreline. Captain, Paul Mannion calmly stepped up and hammered the ball past the Athletic keeper, making it 2-0 to Bridgford as the whistle blew for the end of the half. Bridgford were troubled slightly at the beginning of the second half, with Racing Athletic looking more pumped up after a team talk. But Adam Taylor and Kieron Byng worked effortlessly in the centre to take away any threat for keeper Steve Syme, wawho wasn"t seriously tested on the day. The third goal came from Jon Smith on his return to the side. Smith, hammered a shot from outside the area and into the back of the net, putting Bridgford 3-0 up. It was Matt Astill, making his full debut for Bridgford, who scored the fourth. Astill struck from a superbly-taken free-kick, not seen by the keeper, ensuring a four-goal advantage which surely made it game over for Athletic. Athletic scored in the last minute, denying keeper Steve Syme a clean sheet on his debut game. Captain Paul Mannion said after the game: “This was definitely our best performance to date with the whole team doing incredibly well as a unit. “The defence were solid and assured, the midfield tough tackling and full of movement and the front line proved a thorn in the oppositions side all day. “This display has now set the bench-mark of what this team is capable of and what the manager expects week in week out, 100% commitment and focus and hopefully the results will follow.” Manager David Bratton said: “I made it quite clear to the lads that they had to improve a lot after last Sunday"s poor performance against Friar Tuck. “And, to their credit, they did that. This could have been a tough game today. “it was our first real away fixture against a side we knew little about. They responded in the right way and put their heart and soul into this match, which is great, but we have to do this week in week out, not just turn it on occasionally. “I think we have a good chance of winning something this year, but we are going to have to find a bit of consistency in our performance if we are to do so. Well done to Rob Moreton, who won man of the match, one of many workhorses out there.
