AFC Hayes start the 2017/2018 season with a 2-0 win against Horley Town
A good performance saw "The Brook" earn 3 points against Horley Town in the seasons opening league game.
In the opening league game of the new season AFC Hayes hosted Horley Town & after the previous week's poor performance away to Holmer Green in the FA Cup "The Brook" put in a much improved performance to take the 3 points.
It was the visitors who started the 1st half looking much the better side.Playing a good passing game they denied the Brook possession but were unable to break down the solid home defence, well marshalled by Mateusz Kaczmarek in the centre half position.Kaczmarek was well supported by his defensive partners Charlie Howes,Ben Imre & George Robson,
as the Brook worked hard to repel the visiting attack.
Gradually the Brook midfield began to gain some possession & enable pressure to be put on the Horley defence & in the 19th minute Sekani McCalmon had a good opportunity to open the scoring for the Brook but Hyde the Horley stopper made a good save but the ball rebounded in the path of Lusungo Ndvoi but his header was cleared off the line.
The 1st half continued with Horley having the majority of possession but unable to create any clear scoring opportunities.HT 0-0
The 2nd half started with the Brook having more possession & as the half went on looking the more likely to open the scoring.
In the 63rd minute the home side's James Charles was booked & 2 minutes later he was replaced by Harry Bishop. This change seemed to galvanise the Brook & in the 69th minute a long clearance from Brook keeper Cameron Kennedy found Lusungo Ndvoi on the right wing.He contolled the ball and forced his way into the area where he was brought down by the Horley keeper & the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty.DAN McDonnell took the penalty, firing it past Hyde in the Horley goal.
The Brook were now beginning to control the midfield & in the 75th minute a fine through pass from Dam McDonnell put Sekani McCalmon through on the keeper & last seasons top scorer opened his account for the new season by shooting past Hyde.2-0
The 2nd goal saw Horley have a good 10 minutes when once again they enjoyed the better of the possession but like the 1st half couldn't turn the pressure into chances. On 80 mins Harry Carter became the 2nd home player to receive a Yellow Card.
On 82mins Sean Berry the home manager made 2 substitutions by removing Ndovi & McCalmon & replacing them with Josh Quadry & Nat Mensah.
Although Horley continued to push for a goal the Brook defence held firm & the only moment of concern came in the 91st minute when a Horley forward broke through but was superbly tackled by Brook defender George Robson only for the referee to award a free kick & compound his obvious error by showing the Brook defender a yellow card.
