Withey comeback sparks comeback

AFC Keynsham beat the torrential rain and flooding by switching their away game at Downend Reserves to Manor Road, and come full time were glad they had. The heavy pitch and fading light made things uncomfortable, but the Mighty K got the job done again.... the hard way.

The K's Sunday brought an end to their league campaign with an unlikely 2-1 victory after trailing most of the game. A first half mix up in left back had led to Downend going in at the break with a 1-0 advantage from their only shot on target.

The introduction of Martin Withey, returning from a spell out injured, proved the catalyst for a surprising turn around.

Keynsham dominated the opening of the second half and eventually equalised when Withey headed home after a long succession of corners.

Knowing they needed a win Downend went for all or nothing leaving nobody back and pushing everyone forward. This would prove to be their undoing as very late in the day with K's pinned back goal keeper Jay Powell got hold of the ball and attempted to lob the ball over the Downend keeper, who had pushed up to the half way line. The shot was drifting wide and didn’t quite make it, but Martin Withey made up the ground and finished from the tightest angle with the huge keeper hanging on his shoulder.

The K's were forced to endure an eternity of injury time, with their box being bombarded by long throws and corners. Jay Powell had to produce one more spectacular diving save to deny Downend what would have been a stunning curling goal from the edge of the box.

The final whistle blew and Keynsham knew they had one a battle against their opponents, the elements, and the injury list. Mark Weeks and Richard Izzard were named as a joint man of the match after energy field ground swallowing performances, though there is a special mention for Greg and Darren who were dominant in the air despite playing against some of the biggest men K's have ever faced.

The league season for Saturday's and Sunday's is now over and all that remains is The Manor Road Jug this Sunday.
