An excellent performance but lessons to be learnt.
On a wet Saturday afternoon the youth team had to reflect on what could have been an excellent three points that were lost to top of the table Caerwys FC in a frustrating last thirty minutes of the game. On a good but tight pitch, Airbus Youth started the game with some excellent football and created a number of early chances through some creative play from midfielders Jamie Crowther and Blake Robinson but were just unable to finish. Ollie Lancley was causing the two experienced centre halves all sorts of problems and was unlucky not to score with a shot that the keeper saved when a pass to Blake Robinson for a tap in may have been the better option. Some more excellent play down the flanks from Rhys Hewitt and Harvey Ellis won a corner which resulted in Airbus getting their first goal of the game when Joe Davies scored from close range after the home side failed to clear from Tom Cain’s delivery. The second followed shortly when Ollie Lancley was brought down in the box and Connor Hughes despatched the penalty. The second half saw the home side start strongly but the game appeared to be put to bed when Harvey Ellis finished cooly from inside the box after a quick Airbus counter attack. Soon after Caerwys changed formation and put two centre forwards up front which paid benefits soon after when a defensive error gave the striker the ball who finished well. This gave the home side a massive boost and they started to play more direct football which the young Airbus side were struggling to deal with. With 20 minutes to go till the final whistle some more defensive frailties gave Caerwys more hope when they got the second goal. This seemed to rattle the wingmakers who were struggling to get their normal composure on the ball and a third goal soon followed to put the scoreline even. The game was now end to end with both teams creating chances for the winner but the final ball in the last third for Airbus was never quite good enough and they paid the price when the Caerwys centre forward got to a long ball forward before the Airbus keeper and headed home the winner.
