Aylesbury (26) v Alchester (10)
Four tries and three conversions from Aylesbury in the first 40 left Alchester with big a hill to climb in the second half.
The problems began very early on when a good cross field move from Aylesbury enabled their big powerful No.8 to cross in right corner exposing what turned out to be a very shaky defence from Alchester for most of the first half. The host’s No. 8 converted his own try with a well struck kick from out wide.
Barely two minutes on the clock and 7 nil down.
Three further tries on 15, 38 and 40 minutes and two conversions left the visitors with it all to do after the break, although chances had come in the first 40 but several promising attacks from Alchester failed as much from mistakes made in handling with the last pass as anything defensively from Aylesbury.
By contrast, the visitors very much dominated in the second half, the forwards working hard.
The first 10 minutes saw Aylesbury hardly get out of their own half and getting very little useful ball. The pressure finally paid off when fly half Adam Thompson was driven over on 55 minutes. Ieuan Robinson, playing at full back and taking on kicking duties in the absence of Tom Miles missed the conversion.
Alcester’s second try came on 65 minutes as back row Lou Bryne crashed over from 5 metres out in the left corner, but again Robinson was unable to secure the extra 2 points.
Alchester at least had the consolation of note conceding any points in the second 40 and perhaps reflect on opportunities squandered and too many tackles missed.
