Fawley v A&F Match report
Match report from Head Coach, Paul Hancock.
Following last weeks close encounter with Locksheath Pumas, this week brought a different challenge in our first away league game against Fawley who on paper at least looked as thought they were having a tough start to their season.
Once the match got underway it was clear that this was going to be a battle of the forwards and was going to be a physical game and it was right till the end. Not many games do you see 0-0 at half time but this was down to some good defensive play from both sides but mixed in with some sloppy inaccurate play at crucial times in the red zone which was frustrating to say the least. Added to this a match official who clearly was under pressure to try and maintain any type of continuity and control with ill discipline at the breakdown not being dealt with correctly which again added to frustration for players and supporters alike.
Sadly the theme extended into the second half, with both teams cancelling out the other. Eventually though some good field position was taken with replacement Simon Cole using his head and boot to great effect and when a penalty kick was awarded his quick thinking (even as a vet) caught Fawley napping and we were in for the first score of the game, conversion missed 0-5.
The rest of the game really struggled to get into any patterns and after what looked like an illegal dump tackle on Sonny caused a stoppage in the game, eventually the game was moved to another pitch whilst the injury was looked at. This seemed to spur on the A&F pack as they started to get into their patterns and start to win some quick ball and eventually the Fawley defence which had done well all afternoon broke and Connor Haynes bust through on his debut for a try...making up for his previous Debut Yellow Card !!!
As the clock ticked down and the game was closing out, tired bodies and some injuries started to take its toll. Fawley kept battering away and eventually pounced on a mistake and scored a breakaway try at the death...or so we thought with the officials watch clearly on another time and Fawley had yet another attack and had the last tackle not been as solid as it was this score could have looked different. Game ending 5-12 A&F.
We need to ensure we keep building momentum and keep our discipline and trust in our patterns and structure. This Squad will continue to go from strength to strength as we progress through the season.
