Fleetwood 6 - 9 Aldwinians
For the second week running revenge is sweet but in different match conditions.
At the last meeting of these two teams Aldwinians lost in the last minute of the game, despite being two scores ahead, and were determined to remedy that loss.
Aldwinians won last week with a great display of running and handling, however that was never likely to be repeated today, with a wet Fleetwood pitch and an icy wind blowing, end to end!
Fleetwood kicked off with the wind and determined defence by the visitors meant that the game was played largely in the middle of the pitch, with neither side threatening until the 10th minute when the visitors were adjudged off-side.The Fleetwood stand-off successfully converted the ensuing penalty from just inside the Aldwinians' half for a scoreline of 3-0 to the home side.
As the half continued it became apparent that their forwards were getting the upper hand,as Aldwinians were spending more time in the opposition territory, but 20 minutes into the game Fleetwood were awarded another penalty, this time for a high-tackle,and another excellent kick saw their number 10 increase their lead to 6-0.
The next scoring opportunity came to the visitors when a Fleetwood player failed to roll away after a tackle, full back Tobin missed with a difficult kick failing to bother the scorer and leaving the score at 6-0,however he had an opportunity to make up,just on half-time,when Fleetwood were caught off-side,successfully converted,it meant his team went into the break just 6-3 down.
With the wind now at their backs the visitors upped their game from the restart and the pack began to put the home forwards under a lot of pressure and after quarter of an hour they were penalised for collapsing the scrum, giving Tobin a relatively simple kick from the 22,to level the scores at 6 all.
Aldwinians were now playing good attacking rugby with forwards and backs combining to produce a series of strong attacks, stretching and testing the home defence,to no avail as the defenders managed to thwart their ambitions, and the try never came, however there was one further score when Fleetwood were caught offside and Tobin kicked the decisive points for a winning margin of 6-9.
Doubtless with visions of the previous game,Fleetwood threw everything into attack for the last 10 minutes, but Aldwinians defended well and went home the victors.
