Excitement at Allan Glen’s, and not all about rugby.

A full agenda at Allan Glen’s saw the whole Club involved in games over the weekend.

A flurry of activity on and off the park for the 1sts and 2nds games started with late recruitment of some not so young players to ensure Glen’s had a full team for the 2s. When the referee failed to turn up for the 1sts game, there was an attempt to poach the 2s referee! Unfortunately, he wasn’t qualified for the 1sts game and Bill Graham was press-ganged into service whilst his pint went flat at the bar.

GHK proved too strong for Glen’s however some sterling performances in defence kept the score to a reasonable 36- 7 win to the west-enders.

Meanwhile on the 2s park Glen’s were trying to get the ball to our back division whilst Clydebank sought to keep the ball tight in their strong forwards. A war of attrition ensued and comments of it being a game of ‘Last man standing’ were uncalled for. The “youthful” Glen’s back row registered a Richter Scale combined age of 150 years but kept enough ball flowing to the “more youthful” backs ( if you exclude Andy Hughes that is) to ensure a Glens win of 55-24. Special mention to Steve Bohway who started the afternoon with a beer in hand before making his way through blind side flanker, loosehead prop, hooker and a few Clydebank players as well!

The U18's had stunning performance against Glasgow East/Waysiders Drumpellier. Special mention to former Captain Matt Hughes who was blood injured after a nasty clash of heads and had a nasty gash above his eye. He could not wait to get treated and get back onto the pitch. It was like a scene out of Band of Brothers and really spurned the boys onto a comfortable win. Final score 67-0.

Also very worthy of a mention were Martin Carvalho & Blair Easdon, both of whom scored two tries with other tries being scored by Scott Hughes, Peter Burns, Nic Bounaccorsi and Kieran Laverty. Next week's U18 game is away at Cartha QP.

The sunny weather on Sunday again saw Glenzie’s U16 run out convincing winners against Cumbernauld. The depleted Cumbernauld squad were grateful to Glenzie for some players to ensure the game took place, however, the home side had a comfortable 31-0 lead at half time only to increase this further at the end to a convincing 64-0 victory. Notable players: Haddock, Auld and Cruickshanks scoring a brace of tries.

U15 were due to play Irvine in a Bowl tie however the Ayrshire team called off the fixture, so a bounce match with Lenzie was arranged at short notice. After a poor start a great squad performance saw a 3 try to nil deficit turn into a 6 try to 4 victory. Tries from all areas of the park with half scored by the forwards from where a great platform was set. Stout defence and great attacking lines saw Glen’s victorious 34-24. Special mention to Sean Gordon and Fraser Thomson for their tries, 2 tries from Mark Preston and also good play from Alasdair Beck.

Allan Glen’s S2 played their first competitive match of the season on Sunday, unfortunately it was a depleted side that travelled to Hamilton. The game started brightly and it was Glens who scored first following good interlinking work between forwards and backs culminating in Jack crashing over to score. Hamilton hit back twice as Glens conceded a lot of penalties for high tackles and for coming into the ruck from the side. The boys regrouped with Lewis leaving the Hamilton defence in his wake to level the score. However, just before the end of the first half Hamilton regained the advantage, to lead by three score to two at half time.
Hamilton started the second period strongly and again the Glens tackling was called into question on a number of occasions as Hamilton threatened to run away with the game. To their credit Glens never gave up and finished the game in the ascendancy, with both Jack and Lewis crossing the line to make the final try count 7 - 4 in the home teams favour.

S1 ran out for their first competitive game at this level. An incredible 15 boys turned out ready to start for the S1s this week, but with Hamilton struggling for numbers, we started the 2 x 20 minute halves with 10 aside. Glen's were pumped up and burst out of the traps in to a three try lead before Hamilton knew what had happened!!!
With the sun blazing down and a full sized pitch, we had to have a water break at 10 minutes in each half. Some great tackling from Cammy Moore as usual and robust rucking from Harry Nelson and the rest of the front row, kept Hamilton at bay.
Excellent offloading allowed the ball to be freely spread left and right at will, with Peter Keenan and debutant Joshua running in for 4 & 2 tries respectively.
No one in the team could be faulted for all the efforts put in, with this week's special mention to Josh Storrie for some serious offensive play leaving the opposition wondering what they had to do to stop the Glen's onslaught. Tries also on the board for Ewan and Louie resulted in a 13 - 4 in tries, to the away team.

Sunday afternoon back at Glen’s saw our Minis host Loch Lomond and Lenzie in the early autumn sunshine. Teams of all ages had flowing rugby and great family support. Thanks to all parents who supplied after-match hospitality to the visitors.
