Glen's game of the season...
Allan Glen’s 32 - 31 Glasgow Academicals
A real ding dong match was played at the Bearyards on Saturday, aided and abetted by the dry still conditions which inspired some scintillating rugby.
Thing looked ominous for Glen’s when, after less than a minute, Hermes skipped through the home defence to open the scoring. Brown converted.
Glen’s settled and a move backed up move by the Glen’s forwards, with the ball passing through several pairs of hands, culminated in Ross touching down and Thomson converting.
The visitors added a penalty before McKeown eluded their defence to score out on the wing. Accies then added another two penalties to Glen’s one making a half time score of 15 - 16.
The rugby after the break was a delight to watch as both sides threw the ball about, backed up with some tremendous defending. The lead changed hands again when Kirk scored for Glen’s from short range. Thomson converted and followed this up with another penalty.
However Accies fought back and within eight minutes scored two tries, one by Beattie and another by Brown. Brown converting one and adding a penalty bringing the score to 25 - 31.
Five minutes from time McKeown fought his way to the line from 22 meters out to score for the home side. All spectators and players held their breath as Thomson confidentially converted. That ended the scoring although Accies had two penalty opportunities from well out in the wing which, fortunately for Glen’s, they failed to score.
All spectators agreed that it was the best game of the season.
