Second half fightback runs out of steam

Alloa almost pulled off an incredible come back in their final home fixture of the season against a Blairgowrie side who have only lost two league fixtures this season.

The visitors started strongly scoring in the first minute and registered tries at regular intervals in the first half. Alloa struggled to get any foothold in the game and leaked five tries in total before the break. Their only respite was a penalty and conversion by Lee Cairney and a well taken try by Calum McAllister.

Things improved marginally for Alloa after the break when Cammy Nimmo sliced through the Blair defence, however the visitors had already scored the first try of the half and quickly countered Nimmo's try. Alloa then were sitting 43-15 down with most of the second half remaining with the home crowd fearful of the final losing margin. However the experience and physicality of Rab Truesdale, James Shaw and Michael Doig coming off the bench definitely swung momentum in Alloa's favour. Scott McLennan finished a sweeping Alloa move and then Jamie Shaw was quickest to react to a charge down to register a try scoring bonus point for his side. Lleyton Kearney and Ben Senior were beginning to find gaps in a rattled Blairgowrie defence and Matt Pope began to find his stride. The Alloa number eight (Matt Pope) scored twice from lung bursting breaks and astonishingly Alloa were back to with six points of taking the lead. The Blairgowrie back division still had some gas in the tank though and two late tries sealed the result for the visitors.

Alloa can take heart from their second half performance in the same manner that Blairgowrie will have been pleased with a polished first half display.

Alloa are now scheduled to finish a season that began over eight months at Dundee Rugby 2nd xv on Saturday.
