Alloa snatch late victory in nail biting finish

A last minute penalty goal from Lee Cairney gave Alloa a sensational victory at
The Gardyne Playing Fields in Broughty Ferry. Cairney's strike settled what was
epic battle, producing tries and points galore and arguably produced Alloa's
performance of the season. Alloa had beaten Panmure by fifty points on the
opening day of the season however the Tayside club had been unbeaten in 2023
and have reached the final of the National Bowl Competition therefore Alloa's win
was a significant achievement.

The Earlsfield club were as usual well served by their back-row which on this
occasion was filled by Matt Pope, Lleyton Kearney and Sam Collins. Pope was in
majestic form and was almost unplayable as he bagged a remarkable five try
haul. Kearney had his best game by far in an Alloa shirt and also crossed for a try.
Alloa's other try came from Cammy Nimmo who had reverted to the centre where
he found great angles and created gaps in the Panmure defence.

The flow of the game was fairly even in the opening exchanges before Alloa
stretched away before the break. Alloa then lost their way in the second period
and allowed Panmure back into the match before Lee Cairney struck the
magnificent match winning penalty from out wide and inside his own half.

Alloa complete their home season at Earlsfield on Saturday when they host
Blairgowrie - kick-off 3pm.
