Match report V Blairgowrie

Alloa secure the points in a tight affair

Alloa got their New Year campaign off to a flyer with an excellent away win on Saturday. With only 3 points separating the sides before the match this was always going to be a close fought affair.
The home side won the toss and decided to play with the strong wind at their backs forcing Alloa to defend deep in their own territory for most of the first half. But Alloa’s defence was more than up to the task and despite conceding a high number of penalties the Blairgowrie Stand Off only managed to convert one of his attempts at goal. The only other danger during this first period was when the Blairgowrie Winger kicked over a flat looking Alloa defence and seemed to be favourite to latch on to his chip ahead but the covering Marc Murray displayed a tremendous turn of pace to snuff out the danger.
Alloa had looked dangerous with the ball in hand during the first half and were confident that with the elements in their favour they could overcome this deficit and with the second half only 5 minutes old an excellent period of forward interplay resulted in quick recycled ball for Stand Off, Matt Allan who cleverly fed a nice inside pass for the supporting Gregor Sneddon who scored from 5 metres out and Alan Keir easily added the conversion.
Alloa increased the pressure on the home side defence during the next 20 minutes and after conceding a series of penalties one of the Blairgowrie forwards was sin binned as the referee’s patience was finally stretched. Alan Keir added the 3 points and stretched his sides lead to 7 points.
The pattern of play continued with the Alloa forwards working hard up front securing good ball for the backs to test their opposite numbers and the home side defence was breached once more when young Winger, Greg Anderson pounced on a loose attempted clearance and capped an excellent display to score his first senior try for the club.
Alloa were forced into making a number of changes late on when Stevie Scott, James Dawson and James Shaw had to prematurely leave the match due to injuries and with the final play of the game they conceded a consolation try. This was a well deserved win and in a good team performance, Greg Anderson was awarded the man of the match accolade for his try and overall performance on the wing both in defence and in attack.
Alloa face Harris this Saturday at Earlsfield – 2pm KO.
