ALSAGER TOWN 0 CITY OF LIVERPOOL FC 2 Hallmark Security League First Division Saturday 8th April 2017

Alsager Town’s recent poor run of form continued on Saturday afternoon when they were beaten 2-0 at home by City of Liverpool FC. It was a result that saw the visitors replace their Merseyside rivals Litherland REMYCA at the top of the Hallmark Security League First Division, whilst the Bullets dropped one place to seventh. It was Alsager’s fourth defeat on the trot and if any confirmation were needed, they are now in a battle for sixth place – the final play-off spot - with Sandbach United and Prestwich Heys, as the gap to the top five has widened to a massive ten points.
There seemed an inevitability about the outcome of Saturday’s game, not helped by the fact that key talisman Michael Lennon was unavailable due to a sickness bug. The Alsager players put in plenty of effort and gave it their best shot but their confidence has clearly taken a dip and they never looked like scoring. Leading goal-scorer Mark Grice was left far too isolated and had their only decent chance of the game which came on the half hour mark, when he found himself unmarked twelve yards out but took too long over his shot which was blocked out for a corner. Other than that, Alsager’s best opportunities came from corners or the now familiar long throws into the box by Kyle Stubbs, which were solidly rebuffed by the visitors.
City of Liverpool’s best chance in a goalless and often scrappy opening forty five minutes came in the 26th minute when a David Forbes header forced goalkeeper Chris Fletcher to make an excellent diving fingertip save to deny him.
The first half had been a fairly even affair, however the visitors were dominant after the break and within four minutes they were ahead. Barry Moore played a neat ball down the left, Elliott Nevitt got past Warren Holmes and from an angle curled the ball past Fletcher into the corner of the net. Further opportunities were spurned until they notched their second in the 87th minute, goalkeeper Stephen Longridge hitting a long ball forward which found Daley Woods on the right bye-line, he in turn picked out Nevitt who made no mistake in beating Fletcher.
