Superb Winning Run Thwarted by Hosts in Final

The Altofts U10 Black squad finished off a successful season in style at Garforth Villa Gala. Notoriously a difficult gala, which attracts the top local teams (mainly from the Garforth League), there was a certain amount of trepidation from the boys, but they settled down well in their first game and much to the surprise of the crowd, beat the hosts 1-0 in the opening league game. The boys progressed through the league, brushing aside opponents such as Ossett A, and reaching the knock-out stages with not only maximum points, but clean sheets throughout.

In the quarter final, the boys faced a second Ossett team, and although under attack on several occasions, came away with another clean sheet and a victory. The semi-final saw the boys face Ossett A again, and their was no doubt who the victors would be. Ossett put up strong resistance, but Altofts were playing some of their best football of the season. Another victory and another clean sheet.

The final saw the boys play the hosts for the second time. Garforth had a number of lads returning from Academy football and whilst we'd shown them no respect in the early stages, the boys held back slightly and conceded an early goal. The boys rallied well, but they were chasing the game and left gaps at the back, which was exploited just before the final whistle. The boys going down 2-0.

There were no complaints from either coaches, players or parents. The whole gala was played in the right spirited throughout. The winners were very gracious in victory and we were rightly hailed as the team of the tournament. The disappointment of the boys soon subsided and gave way to immense pride. They received their runners-up trophies to the applause of a large crowd.

The boys had been majestic throughout the whole gala, with Evan taking our Man-of-the-Tournament certificate for his superb performance, which saw him net 7 goals.

Well done boys!!
