After some fairly ropey tackling in recent weeks, we split the boys into two groups, with one group focused on handling work while the other worked on tackling, before swapping over. The passing drills went well enough, with the switch routine descending into chaos as ever, perhaps one week I would be vindicated......
Anyway, the winds were howling and we readied ourselves for the first game against Winnington's white team. Never one to hold back from talking up the boys, this was a fantastic display of rugby for many reasons.
Firstly, our passing continues to improve, providing real continuity to our attack. More importantly, the boys are passing by choice for the benefit of the team. They are all doing it, but Marcus provided a great example of how the boys are acting as a team, rather than individuals. Marcus made plenty of runs through the defence, with his natural strength seeing him plough through 4 or 5 defenders at a time. However, in a 1-on-1 5m from the line, when he probably would have made it through, Marcus popped the ball up to the wing for Ben Lee to score, where we had the guaranteed try.
First half tries came from Tom Hack (x2), Alastair (x2), Sam S (x2) & Sean leaving the try count 7-0. Alastair had a great half, making some great drives, while Sean continued his recent run on the scoreboard as we continue to move the ball out.The game finished 10-0, with second half tries from Ned and Ben Lee (x2), great debut!
So game 2 against Winnington 'blues'. With a quick score from Winnington to take an early lead, we suspected this was the better of the two opposition sides. This provided another great moment, as Tom Hack, clearly not happy with the change in fortunes, ran a try in from the restart while clearly spitting feathers.
It didn't all go our way, however. Indeed, too many boys stand & watch while one or two players do the hard work & ruck for the ball. Similarly, too many runners are left unsupported when we should have cover. We got away with it this week, but if we don't all work for the ball, we won't be scoring tries.
Anyway back to the good news, progress resumed, with tries from Henry (another great game at scrum half), Sam S and Tom H, Ben (x3), Marcus & Harry (debut performance!), final score 9-2.
A strange & fantastic occurrence in this game - Tom & Sam S worked a switch in open play which saw Tom draw 3 defenders and left Sam to score. Collective jaws on the floor along the AK touch line. I rest my case.....!
Anyway, more importantly, new player Harry was fully engaged, saw an opportunity 2m off the line and picked up the ball to score. Sam R also continues to improve, quietly making his tackles & setting up the ball when tackled.
Overall, a great day, with everyone on song, 3 new players, but did you see that switch........
