U13s Convincingly Beat Wirral
First half dominance secures AK win
The U13s welcomed Wirral RFC to Stelfox Avenue on Sunday morning. Although three Kersal players were unavailable due to injury, this had little effect on team cohesion as AK put Wirral to the sword with an excellent first half performance.
Kersal opened the scoring following a series of successful rucks which created a gaping space in the Wirral defence. A second soon followed as AK outpaced Wirral on the outside. Try three came from a passage of forward play up the middle of the pitch which forced Wirral to commit their defenders. As the ball emerged, Kersal were able to charge through the resultant space to score unopposed. The next score was probably try of the match - Wirral had kicked to gain territory but a strong counterattacking run drew defenders across the pitch. Altrincham passed the ball quickly down the line which resulted in a fine score in the corner.
Kersal were temporarily reduced to 12 following some post-tackling argy-bargy but this didn’t stop the flow of tries as AK won a scrum against the head and a fine winger’s run scored a fifth. A six nearly came just before half time if it wasn’t for a fine tap tackle by the Wirral full back.
The team supporters were delighted with the first half try-fest and were hoping for more of the same. They were not disappointed as AK ran in a sixth soon after the restart, but the joy was short lived.
Perhaps it was the generous lead, but AK’s defence began to crumble. Whilst the tackles were being made, no-one was contesting the ball at the breakdown. This allowed Wirral to finally open their account following a good period of sustained pressure. A second try was conceded in much the same way as Wirral looked to decrease the deficit and showed some real determination in attack. Wirral scored an easy third as the AK defence allowed a big overlap.
Despite the support getting twitchy, time was running out for Wirral. Kersal’s scrum was becoming increasingly dominant and was winning every put in. Sustained pressure forced Wirral into touch on their 22, and from the resultant restart, a powerful forward run breached the Wirral defence one last time before the match concluded.
