AK U13s Lose in a Game of Two Halves
After Blistering Start, Penalty Count Costs Kersal Dear
The U13s took the short trip down the M6 to play Sandbach on a cool, damp Sunday morning. The game started brightly as Kersal were two tries up in the first few minutes. A free flowing move allowed the AK wingers to pin their ears back for the first try, and a powerful handoff opened up the central defence to allow Kersal to put down under the posts. Both sides had opportunities to score but for dropped catches and wayward passes, however it was Sandbach who pulled one back despite an excellent cover tackle by the Altrincham full back.
Kersal then accelerated away from Sandbach by scoring three tries in a row, largely due to the more powerful Altrincham scrum and more urgent play. This was a little hard on Sandbach as the teams were equally matched with good defence and attacking play from both sides, and it was Sandbach who managed to pull a try back before half-time to make it 25 – 10 to the visitors.
The second half opened with the sides exchanging a try each and then Altrincham scoring again to make it 15 – 35. This was the highlight of the match after which nothing further went right! Kersal’s defence started to look a little ragged and the Sandbach attack became more direct. Matters were compounded by Altrincham’s sudden extreme penalty count due to hands in the ruck and high tackles. This kept Sandbach entrenched in the Kersal 22 and allowed four unopposed tries (including a penalty try) to make it 35 points apiece. The nail in the coffin came when Sandbach made the winning score on the full time whistle.
From a Kersal perspective, the first half saw some excellent play but the second half was dire. Altrincham could do well to concentrate for the full 50 minutes next week when they take on the Isle of Man team, Ramsey, in the first round of the Cheshire Cup. The match will be hosted by Birkenhead Park RFC.
