First Win of the Season for AKRFC U13s
AKRFC 25 - Ashton-on-Mersey 10
A night of many firsts for the AKRFC U13s: An evening match under floodlights, playing 13-a-side on a full sized pitch, 20 minutes each way, a full squad available, contested scrums, and the first win of the season!
This pre-season friendly against Ashton-on-Mersey RFC was an opportunity to test the skills that the U13s had worked so hard on during summer training. Unfortunately things did not start so well soon after the kickoff; Ashton broke through the Kersal defence and had a clear run to the line. However, Altrincham equalised soon after as a loose ball was collected on the bounce and the score was 5-5.
The remainder of the half was a close affair – Kersal played some excellent rugby as they were competitive in the ruck, held a good defence line and were happy to open the play so the wingers could have a good run. This paid dividends just before half time when a cheeky cross-field kick was collected by the Kersal winger who, with plenty of space available, was able to score with ease to make it 10-5.
The third quarter was a tense affair with both teams having chances to score if it wasn’t for some excellent tackling. Ashton had some very strong runners who continually threatened the AK defence, but it was the total rugby being shown by Kersal that meant they had the majority of possession.
Going into the final quarter, Ashton equalised to make it 10-10 with another powerful run that finally broke the AK defence. A draw would have been a fair result, but the lads were keen to win. For the first time in the match, Kersal were in a position close to the Ashton line which called for a 10 man drive. Whilst not successful on the first two attempts, a third maul resulted in AK scoring in the corner to make it 15-10.
Moving into the closing stages of the game, Kersal had the advantage in terms of fitness and confidence. With the ball moving freely through the backs, AK scored a further two times from the wings to make the final score 25-10. Special mention must go to Fin who, in the delight of scoring, kicked the ball away and was subsequently sent off – let that be a lesson in behaviour to all International players!
This was an excellent pre-season fixture and the Kersal players won well earned bragging rights with their Ashton counterparts at school the following day. Ashton made ideal opposition and their attacking runs really tested the Altrincham defence. A return friendly is arranged for next Wednesday so Ashton can still exact their revenge! However, before then, the U13s visit Stockport RFC on Sunday 10th September.
