U13s Win Double Header Against Ashton-on-Mersey
AK beat Ashton for a second time
With autumn rapidly approaching, the U13s visited Ashton-on-Mersey RFC on a cold and damp Wednesday evening to play the return leg of this pre-season friendly. Kersal were expecting a tough match as AoM would be seeking revenge for the game last week. As it turned out, AK won with ease.
An early stolen ball was driven forward by the AK pack, the resultant ruck saw the ball being spun out to the wing and some quick feet saw a score in the corner. A second try followed as Kersal took a throw-in 5m from the Ashton tryline which was crossed by a thunderous forward move that broke the defensive line.
Ashton made occasional attacks using their key players to try and break the Kersal defence. However, some excellent tackling from all team members meant that there was little way through. Ashton resorted to kicking over the defensive line and although the ball was safely retrieved, a missed clearance kick was collected by AoM who ran it into the corner to score.
With the half drawing to a close, Kersal were playing some wonderful rugby. The ball was being moved from one side of the pitch to the other and a fantastic offload saw AK run in another corner try to finish the half 3-1 up.
Kersal were unable to keep up the momentum in the third quarter and allowed their shape to become a bit ragged; this lead to Ashton breaking through a gap to score. However, by the final quarter, Altrincham re-found their mojo and began to dominate the game again. Two forward tries followed and another by the backs. The final try came as Kersal smashed through the Ashton line for a simple put down. Final score: AoM 10 – AKRFC 35.
