U13s Battle to Win Against Chester B
AK Through to Second Round of Cheshire Plate Competition
Despite the entire M&J fixture list being cancelled this weekend due to excessive rain, this match was always going to go ahead having been delayed for several weeks due to frozen and boggy pitches. AK U13s travelled to Chester to take on their second string team in the first round of the Cheshire Plate competition, and it was the visitors who would come away victorious.
The first half ended with three tries apiece; with Kersal going up three times, only for Chester to equalise. Ball handling by both teams was good considering the excessively muddy conditions, but it was Altrincham who looked more promising as they held onto the ball for significant periods and defended well. It was only some breakaway tries that kept Chester in the game.
By the second half, both teams were tired due to the heavy conditions, but it was Kersal who had the advantage as they played downhill. Having fallen just short of the oppositions line, Altrincham moved the ball right and then left down the full length of the back line, and despite a slip, the ball was kept alive for a try in the corner. There followed a period of attrition where neither side were able to dominate but it was Chester who started to look stronger as they laid siege to the Kersal line for several minutes. Eventually AK managed to break out and forced the game further up the pitch where they were able to win an attacking scrum and go two scores clear of the opposition. It was Chester who made the next score due to some weak tackling but by then it was too late and Kersal were one up at the final whistle.
