First A league game results in a bonus point win for AK Junior Colts
AK's Junior Colts were given a tough seeding in their first year of league competitive rugby, playing in the top division. Despite little opportunity for pre season training the squad turned up with a first class attitude which they carried into the early part of the game. The first quarter was very tight with both teams making mistakes, squandering opportunities to take an early lead.
On 20 minutes AK won a lineout 10 metres from the Stoke line, following an excellent penalty kick to touch from Tom Gill. Luke Daldry took a good, clean catch setting up a driving maul which took the pack over for Harry Backhouse to score, giving AK a 5-0 lead.
Stoke responded within 5 mins, moving the ball quickly from a lineout 5 metres out to score to the right of the posts and converting successfully.
AK had the advantage of the wind in the second half, but weren't able to use it to great effect in the opening encounters. Just after 10 minutes in Max Brooks made a break down the right wing and played a beautifully executed chip over the Stoke defence for Harry Backhouse to chase on to and score as the ball crossed the try line.
Stoke didn't let their heads drop and continued to probe. They made a break from half way and found a gap in the AK back line which they exploited, touching down unchallenged in the corner to give Stoke the lead again.
AK maintained their focus and positivity, scoring a tremendous team try after 61 minutes. From a breakdown on halfway a series of crisp passing moves from right to left found Jay Thompson in possession on wing 40 metres out, using his pace he made a break for the left corner, before a last ditch tackle brought him down 5 metres out. Jay had the presence of mind to pick out Tom Gill's excellent support run, popping a pass from the floor for Tom to score without breaking stride.
With less than 10 minutes to play Stoke were in possession defending right on their own line. The Kersal pack, put pressure on the kicker as he received the ball, forcing him into executing his move quickly and not gaining the yards he would have wanted. The bounce of the ball fell kindly to Tom Gill as it kicked back towards the Stoke line. Gill took the ball on the run and raced over from 20 metres out to score.
Stoke continued to make a game of it right to the final whistle. AK kept their discipline and finished the game winning 20-12, securing an important bonus point victory.
Well done team!
