AKRFC U12s Make Finals of Cheshire Vase

AKRFC 4 – Sale 1

Following a number of cancelled games due to flooded or frozen pitches, it was a perfect Spring day for the semi-final match of the Cheshire Vase competition between locals rivals AKRFC and Sale RFC. The teams had the honour of using the main club pitch and both squads were warmly applauded as they filed out of the dressing rooms and entered the arena.

With AKRFC receiving at kick-off, the forwards immediately made some strong drives into the Sale defence. However, despite the bright start, Sale began to get back into the game and laid siege to the AKRFC goal line. A fine clearance kick relieved the pressure and following a scrum, the AKRFC backs broke a number of Sale tackles that resulted in the first score of the match.

From the restart, Sale once again attacked the Kersal line and the defence did well to hold the ball up over the line. Another lengthy clearance kick began to put the opposition’s defence under pressure and unfortunately Sale had a player sinned bin for a wayward punch. A quick penalty was passed down the line which, following a bit of nervous ball juggling, resulted in Kersal crossing the Sale try line. Halftime score: 2-0 to AKRFC.

Sale began the second half using their forwards to batter the Kersal defence. Following a series of penalties for off-side, the AKRFC line eventually buckled and Sale ran in their first try. However, AKRFC quickly responded with a tap and go penalty 5m out from the Sale try line. Kersal charged over to make the score 3-1.

The rest of the second half was a tense affair with both teams using their forwards to good effect. It took an excellent power charge for AKRFC to break the deadlock and run in the final try of the game. Final score AKRFC 4, Sale 1.

This was an extremely competitive match and congratulations must go to the Sale team for making such a game of it. However, it was AKRFC that edged the draw by nullifying the Sale forwards with some excellent tackling and defence, combined with some directional attacking play.

AKRFC will play the final of the Cheshire Vase on Sunday 30th April at Caldy RFC. The opponents will be the winners of the other semi-final between Birkenhead Park RFC and Helsby RFC.
