Knutsford 7 - AKRFC 3
U12s lose tight match to Knutsford
Knutsford RFC soundly beat AKRFC 8-1 in the Cheshire Cup Prelim round back in October, so Sunday’s friendly was always going to be an interesting gauge of how far the boys have moved on since then.
On a windy March morning, things did not immediately go to plan as Knutsford’s scrum half scored very early with a tap and go penalty – the fact that the ref was still explaining the finer details of the offence to our lads did not seem to matter. After the restart, Knutsford continued to attack the AKRFC goal line and it took some excellent cover tackles by Caine L and Junayd to keep Kersal in the game. It looked like Altrincham were going to weather the storm (metaphorically and literally), especially as they forced a turnover, but as the ball was being passed down the line, the ball got ripped and Knutsford were able to walk in a second try. By this point, the boys were getting tetchy and this probably contributed to a third try by Kuntsford as they picked up from the base of a ruck and breached the Kersal defence. However, all was not lost as the first half ended with AKRFC pulling their act together and finishing somewhat more strongly than they started.
Kersal started the second half as they did the first, but now they had the wind and rain behind them! Unfortunately, having done the hard work by forcing the play well into the opposition’s half, some sloppy tackling and a superb twisting, turning run by the Knutsford centre saw the scoreline become 4-0. Clearly this was going to be a tough morning.
A superb restart by Sam M (who kicked well all morning) put Knutsford under pressure and Kersal were able to charge over the line to open their scoring. Knutsford scored again but a powerful, forward drive by Caine saw him carry a number of defenders, and the ball, over the Knutsford line: score 5-2.
AKRFC were beginning to pile on some pressure with strong running by Isaac P, Elliott and Sam R. However, it was Knutsford who scored next due to a surging run and a dozen missed tackles. Kersal eventually rewarded having forced a penalty 5m from the Knutsford line. A quick pass to Lonan saw him charge at the opposition with enough momentum to breach the defence. Knutsford ran in one more try before the end of the match, which ended with Keiron making a fantastic cover tackle and taking the Knutsford player into touch.
Despite the loss, this was an encouraging performance by Kersal in what turned out to be a very competitive match.
