AK1's late win crushes West Parks N1W hopes
a game watched through finger tips, the whistle couldn't come soon enough!!
On an unusually hot and sunny Stelfox Ave on Saturday 8th April, Kersal 1XV welcomed West Park St Helens, in what turned out to be a tense and close fought battle which had the large crowd of spectators hanging onto any nerves they had left after this season of ups and downs for AK.
It was on the whole, a spirited performance from two credible teams who were both fighting tooth and nail for their respective clubs to stay up in the league, man to man matching in determination, passion and drive. The baking sun and, truth be told, more than a few nervous flutters from both sets of players, at times made the game a difficult watch, but as the players finally settled into the game, some flashes of great flowing, entertaining rugby was on show.
West Park were making good ground in attack and to their credit secured two swiftly ran and well worked tries in the first half. Kersal on the back foot, needed to fill the gaps, they quickly redressed the balance and half time saw the visitors just ahead by 24 points to 17.
Kersal began the second half with renewed passion and vigour, some strong words must have been shared at half time as they appeared to move up a gear, quickly drawing level and then moving into the lead, Kersal's stoic defence proved impenetrable in the second half, resulting in no further points added for the visitors.
A match which was too close for comfort at times, never had the final whistle been so eagerly anticipated, final score 29-24 to Kersal, the win ensures Kersal are now safe and stay in North One West, West Park St Helen's relegation is confirmed.
AK Tries scored by: Sol Neild, John Bishop (2) and James Coulson
Penalty and conversion by Jack Emerson and 2 conversions for Ross Keatch
Final words in wishing West Park SH well for next season, in the genuine hope they make a swift return back into North One West.
