AK1XV penalise themselves out of a win
as Northwich kick last minute match winning penalty
AK (20) vs Northwich (23)
AK came out fighting against Northwich, getting on the scoreboard early with a pushover try from a 5m scrum with the pack dominating at scrum time giving Andrew Frost the opportunity to flop over the white wash.. Coleman took the extras.. AK and Northwich were fighting hard at each other at the breakdown and in open play... AK then take a scrum against the head on the Northwich 5m line, passed a metre out to Callum Yates who crossed the whitewash to take AK to 14-0 up and firmly on the front foot.
Penalties started to creep into the game with both sides seemingly getting pinged far to often, a pen from Northwich takes the score to 14-3. AK respond with a pen of their own leaving it 17-3 ... A great line from the Northwich 13 from midway in the AK 22 saw Northwich claw points back just before the break leaving it 10-17 to AK at the break..
Northwich must have had the riot act read to them at halftime as they came out flying from the break, more akin to the performance that AK had initially expected, the home side's No. 13 again ran an almost identical line as to his first try which AK should have stopped if our defensive line had pushed harder but he crashed through to take the game to 17 all.
AK still dominating at scrum time, were trying to get their backs into the game to get another score on the board but the penalty count for AK was starting to become a big issue, as we seemingly were giving penalties away at will, which gave Northwich the impetus to nudge themselves in front from another penalty. AK at this point were kicking themselves as we should have been too far in front for Northwich to catch up, never mind now trailing by 3 with 5 to go!
AK rallied again fighting to get a big scalp on the road and managed to get a penalty themselves which Dave Coleman willingly took leaving the game 20-20 with 3 mins to go, with the game now seemingly heading for a draw, AK again gave away a penalty, which the Northwich 10 duly and expertly executed, which turned out to be the last play of the game, gifting Northwich the win which they probably didn't deserve on the day, (by their own admission) On refection it all boils down to poor discipline on the penalty count from AK which effectively cost us a big win that was truly needed!
Next Saturday 24th Feb AK1XV travel to Wilmslow to play the rescheduled match which had been postponed due to fog earlier in the season.
