2's grit & determination sealed another great win away at New Brighton
...in arguably the best game so far this season.
Saturday 7th October, Kersal 2XV took the trip to wet and windy New Brighton with a greatly depleted squad due to injuries and unavailability. After showing a lot of grit and determination, Kersal secured the away win with arguably one of their best games of the season so far.
With new players gelling into the squad, including fly-half Matt Tully, Simon Betts and student Dale Maxwell, Kersal had to play smart rugby in the first half in both set-piece and open play. Defence by the 2nd team in their own territory forced New Brighton attacks to break down with errors; along with this, Kersal wisely took advantage of these moments to clear back into New Brighton ground for their own attacks.
After stalemate 0-0 first-half, an early penalty opportunity in the second half allowed Jordan Roberts to put Kersal 3-0 ahead. Kersal kicked onwards from here, using the wind to their advantage with the rain still pouring. A try from Matt Tully put Kersal 8-0 up with 10 minutes to go and Kersal never looked backwards from here. A late converted try cemented their win, which sees them go 7 points clear of 2nd place in the league.
Next weekend sees a break away from the league fixtures and a return to the cup. They have been drawn at home to league compatriots Whitchurch 2s and hope to take their league form into the cup, in order to take a step forwards into the quarter-finals.
