Widnes halt 2's winning run
the focus already now on Glossop away Sat 11th Nov
Altrincham Kersal 2XV 12-15 Widnes 2XV
Altrincham Kersal 2nd XV welcomed the travelling Widnes at home this weekend in what was set to be a physical encounter with the opposition.
Kersal did not get off to the best of starts, with Widnes managing to score and go 7-0 up within the first minute. This kicked Kersal into action and they started to defend barrages of Widnes attacks and then retain possession of their own. They grew into the game and a powerful run from back-rower Alfie was enough to get him close enough to the line to reach over and score the try, narrowing the margin to 5-7. Another try from out wide by Widnes extended their lead to 12-5 going into half-time.
Phases of possession were then exchanged in the second half, and it was Windes who first came out with something to show, kicking for goal after a penalty was awarded to make the score 15-5. Kersal were next to respond, taking advantage of a numerical advantage with 2 Widnes players in the sin bin; Dave Coleman finished off a good run of support play and scored under the posts to take the score to 12-15 and all to play for. Unfortunately, this was all that the Kersal attack could muster in response to the advantage they had, and couldn’t score again which meant they narrowly slipped to their first defeat of the season.
Tries: Alfie Santaniello, Dave Coleman
Conv: Dave Coleman (x1)
Kersal face Glossop 2nd XV away next weekend, in a fixture which sees 1st and 2nd in the league clash and lock horns. They will be hoping to respond positively to this their loss and return to winning ways.
