Tough, Physical game away at Glossop for 2XV
...agonising defeat...hoping for better fortunes next week in the Cup!
Glossop 2XV 29-28 Altrincham Kersal 2XV
Altrincham Kersal 2nd XV took the trip to Glossop at the weekend, which saw the top 2 teams in the league clash, in what would prove to be a close and agonising trip for the visitors.
Glossop started the game in a very physical nature, playing a forward-orientated game utilising their size effectively. This caught Kersal off-guard and through power and persistence, Glossop racked up 3 tries and a penalty, as Kersal struggled to maintain sustained possession and build pressure of their own. They went into the break 20-3 down.
The second half saw Kersal 2nd XV come out of the blocks looking like a different team and performing as the know they can, chipping away at the points margin through continued periods of pressure. Pressure through both forward set-piece play and backs support play meant the tries kept coming and Glossop heads began to drop as Kersal’s rose, as they had done tremendously to fight back to take the lead 26-25 with minutes left. After some Glossop possession and a missed penalty for the home side, it looked like the visitors might hold on for the win but the home team were awarded a contentious looking penalty with only seconds left ticking, which allowed their fly-half to seal a 1 point win – agonising for the Kersal players after the fightback they had put on.
Tries: Jack Snoddy, Ali ‘Slezza’ Berryman, Jack Braithwaite, Dave Coleman
Conv: Dave Coleman (x2)
Pen: Dave Coleman (x2)
Next weekend sees a return to the cup for Kersal 2nd XV in the quarter-finals at home. The knock-out nature of the cup will be motivation towards getting the team back to winning ways; what will bring additional motivation is that the fixture sees them immediately face Glossop 2nd XV again, where Kersal no doubt will be hoping to make amends for the narrow league defeat.
Kick-off will be 2:15pm at Stelfox Avenue.
