Holmes Chapel secure the win as winter set in at Stelfox
2XV unable to capitalise on last weeks Cup success
Altrincham Kersal 2XV 10-21 Holmes Chapel 1XV
A week after their cup triumph, Altrincham Kersal 2XV faced Holmes Chapel 1st XV at home, who themselves were coming into the game off some good results.
With playing conditions displaying more characteristics of winter, and several games in their league that weekend forced to be postponed, things for Kersal did not start ideally. Holmes Chapel kept most of the possession in the early exchanges and Kersal found themselves down to 14 men for 10 minutes due to ill-discipline. Their defence stepped up well during this period and kept scoring opportunities for the visitors to a minimum, eventually letting through scores through a penalty and converted try from their winger. In one of their first periods of extended possession, the Kersal attack gained good ground and put the visitors under some pressure for some time in their own 22. Some quick thinking from a quick tap allowed for some link up play to put Kersal fly-half Ben Harris over in the corner for a try, making the score going into the break 5-10.
Kersal started the second half positively, getting the first score of the half after some good support play from both forwards and back giving prop Jack Gallimore the chance to go over from close range for his second try in 2 games, tying the scores at 10-10. Despite continued attacking efforts asking questions of the visiting defence and the game being into the balance up until late in the game, Kersal failed to cross the whitewash again, as they saw Holmes Chapel pull further away thanks to the boot of their fly-half, to make the final score 10-21.
Tries: Ben Harris, Jack Gallimore
Next weekend sees a break in the fixtures for Kersal 2XV, with no fixture scheduled; their next match is for the weekend afterwards, in what is sure to be the highly anticipated clash against local rivals Bowdon 2XV.
