2XV with a comprehensive win over a struggling Capenhurst
a comfortable win, easing the wounds from last week's narrow loss to Aldwinians
Altrincham Kersal 2XV 46-7 Capenhurst 1XV
Altrincham Kersal 2nd XV were aiming to return to winning ways this weekend, fielding a strong side at Stelfox Avenue against a struggling Capenhurst 1XV side.
Kersal started strong and it was the forwards that got the score rolling with a strong maul formed from a lineout, which saw them trundle over the try line and Jack Gallimore get the game’s first try. Another try from back-rower Jake Langmead-Jones followed to extend Kersal’s lead, before a sustained period of pressure with powerful running saw Capenhurst score, which ensured Kersal were kept on their toes. Kersal then responded from the kick-off by going on the attack, and they never looked back from there on in.
Half-time saw Kersal winning with a comfortable margin, however Kersal made sure not to take their foot off the gas and aimed to continue applying pressure to the opposition. Capenhurst tried their best to score in the second half, but some solid defensive resistance saw Kersal step up and deny the opposition the opportunity to close the margin. Dominance in the set-piece area, in both the scrum and the lineout, allowed for more expansive rugby to be played, giving the backs the opportunity to open up against the opposition and keep the scoreboard rolling. All in all, the tries came from players across the team and on another day would have seen more Kersal players cross the try line for more tries of their own.
Tries: Jack Gallimore, Jake Langmead-Jones (x2), Jack Snoddy (x2), Dale McLean, Chris Weighell, Ishmael Bashir
Conv: Jack Braithwaite (x1), Jordan Roberts (x1),
Pen: Jack Braithwaite (x1)
The comprehensive win over Capenhurst sees the Kersal side move back up to 3rd in the table, behind Glossop and level on points with Holmes Chapel and local rivals Bowdon.
Next weekend sees Kersal make their first away trip of 2018 to play Whitchurch 2nd XV, where they will be hoping to continue winning ways with the momentum generated from this week’s result and grab another win to keep pressure on all the teams at the top of the table.
