AK2's welcome a return to winning ways
demolishing New Brighton 2XV 69-5
Altrincham Kersal 2XV 69-5 New Brighton 2XV
A week after an agonising 27-25 loss away to Whitchurch 2's, in what was a cracking encounter, Kersal 2nd XV were aiming to return to winning ways at home against a visiting New Brighton side.
Kersal started on the front foot and it was the forwards that got the score rolling with strong phase play from powerful running building pressure, leading prop Alistair Berryman to pop the ball inside to hooker Andy Thomas for the game’s first try. Kersal extended their lead soon after with a wonderful bit of play from scrum-half Paul Howarth, spotting some space on the left wing, chipping the ball over the opposition and the ball fell perfectly for him to collect it and dot down the try under the posts. Soon after followed the first of John Coulson’s tries, after some strong running and support play from the team set the platform for the try.
Half-time saw Kersal winning with a comfortable margin, however they made sure not to take their foot off the gas, aiming to stick to their game plan and continue applying pressure to the opposition. This pressure continued in both defence and set-piece, which lead to continued scores throughout the half from the Kersal players. New Brighton to their credit kept on fighting to the end and came away with a try for their efforts, after continued forward play close to the fringes took them over the try line. Wanting to finish the game with the last say, Kersal’s Jordan Roberts crossed for the game’s last score for a well-deserved try with the last play of the game.
Tries: Andy Thomas, Paul Howarth, John Coulson (x3), Jake Langmead-Jones, Paul Appleton, Sean Clayton (x2), Andy Veitch, Jordan Roberts
Conv: Matt Tully (x4), Paul Howarth (x2)
The return to winning ways with the comprehensive win sees Kersal move back to the top of the league.
Next weekend sees Kersal travel away to play Sefton 2nd XV, hoping to continue their form and gain back-to-back wins.
