WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!!!
AK 2XV secure top spot after a fantastic season
Altrincham Kersal 2s 46-16 Glossop 2s
Saturday saw Kersal 2nd XV face off at Stelfox Avenue against Glossop 2nd XV. Second in the league hosting first, in a match where the winner would take the league title, after both teams secured league promotion last weekend.
In front of a big number of home and travelling supporters, the game kicked off in the sunshine and it was Glossop that got on the scorecard first going 3-0 up. Kersal soon responded and spent extended periods in opposition territory. Opting to kick for the corner instead of taking the points for a penalty proved the right option, as this created a platform to go on and score the game's first try, and this spurred Kersal on to score further tries. They went into the break 16-6 up.
Glossop had obviously been read the riot act during the halftime break as they came out of the blocks firing in the second half. Soon into the half they scored to narrow the gap to 5 points at 16-11. This kicked Kersal into action and from then onwards they didn't take a backwards step, putting an immediate halt to the Glossop momentum. Some solid defence and set pieces, strong running as well as good management put Kersal in commanding positions to score tries. Opportunities came from across the team with forwards and backs linking together to keep the scoreboard ticking in Kersal's favour. With the score at 46-16, the ball was finally put into touch and the full-time whistle was sounded to jubilation of both the Kersal team and supporters which, after a hard fought season by all involved in the squad over the season, confirmed the league title was Kersal's.
Tries: Oli Wright (x2), Alex Jordan (x2), Sean Clayton, Conor Whyley, Jack Braithwaite, Dan Quinn
Conv: Paul Howarth (x3)
With the league title secured, the season for the champions is not over. Next weekend sees them going for the double as they face Didsbury Toc H 2s in the cup final, where they will be hoping sign off the season in style. This will be played away at Burnley, with kick-off being 1:45pm.
