Altrincham Kersal 2sXV kicked off 2019 against fellow league strugglers Sedgley Park 3XV at home on Saturday.
The game began very strongly, with Kersal dictating play and possession. The lineout had the opposition under pressure and on the back foot, whilst the backs were making some promising progress exploiting the opposition defence out wide. Off the back of some close knit play from the back of a maul, space was created for Kersal to go over for the game's first score with a try from centre Sam Moncur putting them 5-0 up.
Going into the break 12-5 down there was still all to play for, and Kersal were by no means out of contention. Key injuries injuries to centre Sam Moncur and fly-half Callum Yates meant Kersal had to quickly adapt their playing style and regain their structure. With this being the case, Sedgely Park took advantage and began to turn the screw and rack up points. (Although 'turning the screw' obviously wasn't enough for the opposition prop, who tried out a bit of MMA on-pitch, which was quickly dealt with by the referee).
The match finished 33-5 to Sedgley Park 3XV who deserved their win. Kersal look to take the positive aspects from the team's performance, a team which included 4 current senior colts, going into next weekend. Next Saturday sees them with another home fixture against league leaders Birkenhead Park 2XV
