Ambleside visiting Whinney Hill on Saturday in a close encounter came away with a hard fought 3 - 1 victory. Ambleside were without Cory Vickers
and Mike Rushton
while Whinney Hill signed on 2 Accrington Stanley youth players before the match.
There was a strong wind which made attractive football difficult but it did produce a competitive match.
The Whinney Hill team were a vastly improved side from the fixture early in the season at Ambleside.
Early play was fairly equal - Maison Mcgeechan
having the ball in the net but it was ruled offside but after 10 minutes Ambleside took the lead when following good play down their right Matt Parkinson’s well placed shot found the far corner of the net. The lead did not last long when after failing to clear a corner McKenzie headed home an equaliser.
Again play was fairly equal until Ambleside restored their lead when a corner by Aaron Helliwell
was not dealt with by the Whinney Hill defence and the ball fell to Michael Barron
who scored from close range.
Just before the break Whinney Hill were unfortunate not to be level when a McKenzie header hit the post.
The 2nd half saw Whinney Hill press forward and with the wind behind them they played a lot of high balls forward but the Ambleside defence although under pressure held firm . Whinney Hill thought they had a penalty claim but the referee was on the spot and waived the appeal away .
With 5 minutes to go a surging run by Dan Dillon ended with him being upended in the penalty area by Danny Finch and Rob Wilson calmly put the spot kick away to seal the victory.
