Today's derby day notes....

It’s quite a big weekend for sport with the Grand National running this afternoon and the golf Masters taking place (although I’m not sure who’s bothered about that personally). Nothing bigger though than this local derby in League One West between the Amman United and Ammanford here at Cwmamman Park.

Let’s be honest, we’re not where we want to be leading into this game. We would rather not be in the relegation spot six points adrift of safety with only two games left to play after today, having lost the last four games and conceding 188 points in the process. While we’re at it, we might as well throw in the unfortunate spate of injuries, unavailability, and players playing out of position in those games as well. If we were a Grand National horse we would have a tent quickly erected around us and we would have been shot. Nobody can question the commitment of those on the field though, but from now, it’s kill or be killed.

The Amman like nothing better than April sunshine on Cwmamman Park, and thankfully according to Derek, it’s going to be glorious. Last year we were beating Newcastle Emlyn and Maesteg Quins here and who can forget the 100 pointer against Milford two April’s ago. Ammanford beat us in 30 minutes in January, for the first 40 and last 10 we were dominant, leading 11-0 at half time. Hopefully we can dominate for long enough today to get that much needed win.

Since then they have won five and lost four, narrowly beating bottom of the league Carmarthen Athletic last week and top of the league Kidwelly by a point the week before. We have had some bad results lately but so have most teams in this league, Ammanford themselves in one game conceded 49, Crymych (53), Felinfoel (47), Loughor (41) and Tenby (48 and 76) have also been on the wrong end of hammerings. It proves how unpredictable this league has been.

The loss on the Rec in January sparked something in our boys and we went on to win four of the next five games, only some dodgy reffing in Tenby stopping it being a run of five wins. Whitland (above us) have some tough games ahead and we hope that we rediscover that spark that ignited the last time we played the Oysters to see us overtake them again. Despite having a somewhat depleted squad again today, but bolstered by Youth boys Rhydian and Dan Jones, Tony, Gareth and the team will be confident of at least one win this afternoon. Their money gambled on the horses might as well have been flushed straight down Howard Laugharne’s toilet. Pob lwc heddi .
